Shou sugi ban (pronounced “show sue-gee bon”) is an old Japanese technique that preserves wood by charring it. This technique naturally makes the wood resistant to both fire and water.  Technically the ‘sugi’ in shou sugi ban refers to a Japanese cedar tree, but in the vein of not pronouncing the ‘o’ in ‘opossum’, we’ve decided to just go with the flow and refer to this method as shou ‘sugi’ ban, regardless of the type of wood being used.
